LASIK: Step by step

The All-Laser Custom LASIK Procedure Step by Step
At Saddleback Eye Center, we make every effort to ensure that your LASIK procedure is as comfortable and easy as possible. LASIK takes only minutes per eye. A series of numbing drops will numb your eyes so that there is no pain during the procedure. Most patients tell us, "If I had known it was this easy, I would have done it years ago!"
After your eye has been numbed with a series of eye drops, Dr. Manger will use a device to gently hold your eye open. You will remain awake and comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the procedure is completed, you will be given additional antibiotic eye drops to take home.
Step 1
Dr. Manger creates a detailed, three-dimensional map of your eye using Wavefront technology, which accurately and precisely measures the imperfections and irregularities in your visual system. Wavefront technology is 25 times more accurate than the measurements typically taken during an eye exam, allowing us to correct imperfections that could never before be measured or corrected. Wavefront technology allows for a truly customized treatment that delivers the clear, crisp vision you desire.
Step 2
Dr. Manger then uses the computer-controlled Intralase laser to create a corneal flap. The Intralase laser offers an unprecedented level of safety with a 100% blade-free approach. By eliminating the metal blade, the Intralase laser offers increased patient comfort, accuracy, and precision compared with older LASIK methods. The Intralase laser takes approximately 15 seconds per eye to create the flap.
Step 3
Using your Wavefront information, Dr. Manger uses a cold-beam excimer laser to gently and precisely reshape your cornea. Dr. Manger will choose either the VISX Star 4 with Iris Registration laser or the Allegretto Wavelight laser for this part of your procedure, depending on your prescription and what he believes will give you the best visual result. The treatment laser takes less than a minute to reshape the cornea. The corneal flap is gently placed back into its original position and the healing process begins immediately.
After the procedure, recovery is quick and most people can return to work and other normal activities the very next day. Learn more about what to expect the day of your surgery.
